IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, LLC, a research and development institution focusing on quantum computing and sensing, advanced communications, electronics, manufacturing and materials science.
Both organizations are committed to advancing the frontiers of science and technology, the company said. HRL brings capabilities in silicon-spin qubits, cryogenics, control electronics, packaging and interconnect technologies.
The acquisition will strengthen IBM’s quantum hardware roadmap, complement its skills in superconducting quantum computing and support overall innovation across quantum technology.
IBM’s roadmap includes its fault-tolerant quantum computer IBM Quantum Starling, which is expected by 2029, the company said. Starling is planned to be followed by Blue Jay, IBM’s next-generation fault-tolerant quantum computer, targeted for the mid-2030s.
HRL’s silicon-based quantum technologies will also expand opportunities for future collaboration with Anderon, IBM’s pure-play quantum wafer foundry. Boeing and General Motors, HRL’s former owners, will continue to partner with IBM and HRL on quantum applications.
