    Michael Amori, Virtualitics

Long before Michael Amori co-founded an AI solutions company, he was studying how complex systems behave. First, through physics, and later, from a data science and trading desk at Deutsche Bank. There, he witnessed firsthand decision-making in an increasingly complex environment and began considering how technology could help people reach clearer, more informed conclusions.

That idea ultimately led him to co-found Virtualitics.

A decade later, Amori is applying that same thinking to some of the federal government’s most consequential missions. As Virtualitics marks its 10th anniversary, Amori is focused on helping government customers move from fragmented data and information overload to faster, more confident action.

In this Q&A, he discusses Virtualitics’ evolution from advanced data visualization to AI-native readiness solutions, why explainability is essential to building trust in AI and how the company’s Northern Virginia expansion supports its federal growth. He also reflects on the experience that shaped his commitment to U.S. national security and the lessons he carries from competitive swimming into business.

Can you provide a brief overview of your professional background and career progression?

I was born in Italy and originally came to the U.S. to study. I first earned a BS in Physics from Columbia, and eventually an MBA in finance from Harvard and an MS in Physics from Caltech. I started my career at Deutsche Bank, running a data science and trading desk, and observed decision-making in increasingly complex environments. I was intrigued by how technology could be applied, transparently, to drive quality decisions. That led me to co-found Virtualitics. Today, as CEO, my focus is helping customers apply AI in ways that connect insights to understandable decision outcomes.

Why was this the path you chose, and how influential was it to your career?

I’ve always been drawn to solving difficult problems. Physics taught me rigorous thinking, finance showed me how decisions create real-world consequences, and AI offered a way to bridge the two. That belief continues to guide Virtualitics today: technology creates the most value when it helps people make better decisions.

Do you have a personal connection to the current mission you support?

Absolutely. As a student, I visited Berlin and saw firsthand the stark contrast between East and West. That experience reinforced my belief in the opportunities that freedom creates, ultimately influencing my decision to come to America to study. Combined with my commitment to supporting U.S. national security missions, that perspective has shaped my belief that AI should help people make critical decisions with confidence.

What are your current top priorities and responsibilities? How do these relate to your company’s overall mission/growth strategy?

My top priority is making Virtualitics the best company in the market for delivering AI readiness solutions. To do that, we’re focused on staying at the forefront of AI innovation, advancing our AI-native technology stack, and helping customers apply AI in ways that are trusted, explainable and operationally impactful.

Where do you and your team see growth opportunities as they relate to your customers’ needs or top pain points?

Organizations continue to have more data than ever but struggle to turn it into effective decisions. That’s because it’s siloed and in some cases, even paper-based, or full of shorthand that can’t be deciphered. The biggest opportunity lies in helping leaders benefit from the power of AI to get access to the right information, analyze it within context, and move from information overload to operational certainty. That enables faster, more confident decisions.

How are you and your team planning to address and prepare for these opportunities?

Explainability is central to the trust necessary for growth and adoption of our AI solutions, which is why it’s at the core of everything we do. Organizations need to understand why an AI solution is making a recommendation before they act on it, which is why we’re focused on applying technologies like agentic AI in ways that are transparent, trusted and operationally impactful.

How important is mentorship & networking in GovCon? Were they influential to your career?

They’re incredibly important, and both have been instrumental in my career. GovCon is built on trust, credibility and long-term relationships. Throughout my career, I’ve benefited from mentors who challenged my thinking and expanded my perspective. We’re fortunate to have a world-class board of government advisors who held senior leadership positions across the defense and national security community. Many have told us they wish they had access to capabilities like Virtualitics during their time in service, and their insights continue to help shape our solutions, guide our growth and strengthen our support for customer missions.

What is something most people don’t know about you personally?

Most people don’t know that I’m a competitive swimmer, and so is my son. I’ve never had formal swim coaching, but I use AI as my coach to analyze performance and identify opportunities to improve. My goal is to qualify for the U.S. Masters Championships in the 50 freestyle. Swimming reinforces something I believe applies equally to business: small details matter, and consistent discipline over time is what drives results.

Given this is the 10-year anniversary of Virtualitics, how have you seen the company shift from the start to now?

The company has evolved tremendously. We began by helping organizations explore and understand complex data through advanced visualization, but as AI matured, so did our approach. Today, we’re delivering AI-native readiness solutions that combine a decade of expertise in data, AI and decision intelligence to support mission-critical decisions. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to helping people make sense of complexity. Looking ahead, we’re focused on scaling our AI readiness portfolio and bringing those capabilities to customers across the government.

Where do you see Virtualitics Iris playing a role in the next 10 years?

I see Virtualitics Iris becoming the primary way users interact with AI-powered decision intelligence. Instead of stitching together information from multiple systems, Iris will provide a seamless experience that helps users access information, uncover insights, explore options and take action in one place. As the technology evolves, it will play an increasingly important role in helping organizations improve mission readiness and make faster, more confident decisions.

How has the expansion of the new Northern Virginia office helped continue the growth of the company?

Having a presence in Northern Virginia brings us closer to many of our most important customers, bringing the technology from the West to Washington. As a company, growth follows proximity to the mission, and being embedded in this community allows us to better support our customers while continuing to expand our impact across the federal market.
